Here's a brief summary of what I've been doing for the past few years.
I
now work at Realnames Corporation running the sales dept. Its a ton of
work but an absolute blas! We sell Internet Keywords that are used instead
of all the www's and .coms.
.
I
previously worked at VitalSigns Software where we make Net.Medic as the Director of OEM and
Strategic Sales. This is the 3rd startup in as many years. 'Tis the way of the
Valley. Good thing I've never burned any bridges in the past - It's not what you
know here, it's who you know! We make a browser companion that tells a user what is
actually happening behind the spinning hourglass. I get to interface w/ all the
companies that bundle our product as well as the largest customers that buy
our product. I'm employee number 21 and its a blast.
I work(ed) in the sales dept as an OEM
Strategic Account Manager at Netscape Communications Corporation. Its also where I get all
the cool software to create websites like this! I managed Hewlett Packard and IBM
worldwide and got to do a ton of big deals with both companies. I was the one that
got Netscape Navigator ported to OS/2. Ok, so IBM paid me 11.5 million bucks to do
it. Wouldnt you do it? This job was an absolute blast. To think that I was
part of the Tornado and getting to go public with these guys was a dream come true.
It also let me buy THIS. We were on the cutting edge
of technology and in the center of the universe in web terms. That is until
Microsoft came along and spoiled it for all of us. Sick of selling against free, I
went on the lookout for another small startup with 3 things in mind: 1) didnt compete w/
MSFT or NSCP 2) used all this great web technology that NSCP commercialized 3)could
actually sell the software for money to people that would pay for it. Simple, right?
Not quite. A few months later, I landed a great job at VitalSigns Software.
I found a cool job
with a little startup company called Netmanage, the makers of the Chameleon Products. They
had about 60 people when I joined. There was the promise of going public and all that came
with it plus a chance to go into Sales!! Cool. Whats this quota thing all about, anyways?
I stuck with that, went into sales management and then followed my gut feeling that told
me to "get the heck outta dodge in a hurry". Intent on getting a job at
Netscape, I was the first one to officially resign from NetManage and I was like the
headlight on the front of the train.
At Gary's urging, I
retired from Chevron and went to join Ungermann Bass
as a Systems Engineer. Boy, what a mistake that was. "Come on Jeff, you'll love it.
Really! Trust me!" And then he resigns 2 weeks after I start. Great friend. So, I
stuck it out for 10 months until they laid off almost the entire San Jose sales office (22
people!) except for 3 people. They expected me to cover the entire Bay Area when there
were 5 others covering it before. Get me the heck outta here!
My first job out of college was with Chevron
Information Technology Company. That was a cool job! I got to evaluate and implement
hardware and software networking products for the whole company. After evaluating
Ungermann Bass Access Ones and deploying them across the company, I ran into this goffy
guy named Gary Sherry. Ask him about how I turned a UB ethernet adapter into an FM radio
receiver so I could tune in KFOG. It came in really clear. Really! I also was on my
way to becaming a CNE with a CNI (Certified Netware Engineer/Instructor). I helped
guide Chevron into the age of computing. What a concept!
I graduated from Chico State (yes,
a party school and yes, I partied!) in 1988 with a degree in electrical engineering. I was
on the 5 year plan because unlike some of those stuffy engineering folks I actually had a
life! I was first string piano in the Jazz Band, played in a rock band called
"Cheetah", took a wine tasting class and ran my own electronics repair company
called "The Electron Meister". Not only did it pay the bills, I was buying all
the sound equipment for the band as well as a ton of keyboards for myself!
